Agege LGA Suspends Food Vendors in Schools to Combat Cholera Outbreak
The Agege Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos has taken a decisive step in the fight against the recent cholera outbreak by suspending food vendors operating in schools under its jurisdiction. The proactive measure is part of the strategy to contain the spread of the deadly disease within the state.
Following the announcement by Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos, revealing the emergence of a suspected cholera outbreak that claimed five lives and left approximately 60 individuals hospitalized, the local government deemed it necessary to implement strict regulations.
As of June 15, Abayomi updated the public on the cholera situation, reporting a total of 350 suspected cases, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities recorded within the state. These figures underscore the urgency and severity of the health crisis at hand.
Subsequently, the number of cholera-related fatalities in Lagos has continued to rise, prompting swift action from the Agege LGA. Ganiyu Egunjobi, the Chairman of the local government, emphasized the importance of community-wide awareness and preventive measures to combat the spread of the disease.
Egunjobi highlighted the extensive sensitization campaigns conducted by the council, targeting market stakeholders and educational institutions. Radio broadcasts were utilized to disseminate crucial information on precautionary steps to safeguard the community and prevent further outbreaks.
In a bid to ensure the safety of students and pupils, all school food vendors have been suspended by the Agege LGA. This temporary measure aims to minimize potential exposure to contaminated food sources and enhance overall hygiene practices within educational settings.
The chairman urged residents to adhere to strict hygiene protocols, especially in food preparation and consumption. By emphasizing personal responsibility and community vigilance, the local government aims to curb the cholera epidemic and protect the health and well-being of its citizens.
