Windsor International Airport Air Transat Punta Cana

WINDSOR, Ontario — Starting December 19, 2025, Air Transat will offer weekly direct flights from Windsor International Airport to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This new service, running every Friday until April 10, 2026, responds to local demand for convenient travel options to tropical destinations.

Mark Galvin, the president and CEO of Windsor International Airport, announced the new route during an interview on AM800’s Mornings with Mike and Meg. He expressed excitement about the partnership with Air Transat and noted that many travelers in Windsor have been asking for this destination. “Punta Cana is one of those destinations that comes up frequently when I speak with people at dinners,” Galvin said. “We’re happy to have it back.”

Punta Cana is well-known for its all-inclusive resorts, beautiful beaches, and suitability for winter travelers looking to escape the cold. Galvin emphasized that this service will simplify travel for tourists who previously had to drive to larger airports like Toronto or Detroit.

The new flights are a key part of Air Transat’s winter 2025-26 schedule, which is designed to enhance direct access from smaller Canadian markets to popular vacation spots. Galvin commented, “This isn’t just a seasonal route; it represents a renewal for Windsor’s aviation sector, which has faced challenges in recent years.”

Air Transat’s introduction of the Punta Cana route follows a broader strategy to expand its network in Latin America and the Caribbean. The airline has also announced new routes from Charlottetown and Fredericton to Cancun, which will start February 18, 2026.

Travelers can expect to see competitive pricing as Air Transat positions itself as a leading option for Canadians seeking sunny getaways. “Air Transat is a great brand and partner for us,” said Galvin.

This development highlights the growing trend of regional airports gaining direct international flights, reflecting a shift in travel preferences among Canadians looking for convenience and easy access to leisure destinations.

The anticipation around the new flight is palpable, as community members look forward to a winter escape to paradise.
