Winter Storm Road Conditions Alabama Texas 2025

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is urging drivers to postpone travel on Friday as wintry weather is expected to create hazardous road conditions. Crews have prepped interstates, bridges, and major roadways to ensure safer travel for those who must venture out. ALDOT will provide real-time updates on road conditions through its website and app.

ALDOT spokesperson Brantley Kirk emphasized the importance of cautious driving. “Drivers should add extra time to their trips and avoid using cruise control,” Kirk said. “It’s crucial to stay focused on the road and be aware of black ice.” Kirk also advised motorists to be mindful of crews working overnight to maintain road safety.

Meanwhile, in Texas, residents are preparing for freezing temperatures and potential winter precipitation. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recommends that drivers check road conditions via 511 or their website before traveling. “Road conditions can be more dangerous than anticipated, especially with black ice,” a TxDOT spokesperson said. “Drive as if you’re on ice if temperatures are near freezing.”

Both states are encouraging residents to prepare emergency kits for their vehicles. The National Weather Service (NWS) suggests including items such as blankets, flashlights, and non-perishable food. “If you must travel alone, inform someone of your route and estimated arrival times,” the NWS advised.

Winter weather advisories, watches, and warnings are in effect across both states. The NWS categorizes these alerts based on severity, with winter storm warnings being the most serious. “Wind chill watches are issued when extremely cold air and strong winds could create dangerously low wind chill values,” the NWS explained.

Residents are also reminded to care for pets and livestock during the cold snap. “If you’re cold, they probably are too,” the NWS noted, recommending adequate shelter and access to unfrozen water for animals.

As the winter storms approach, officials in Alabama and Texas are urging caution and preparedness to ensure safety during the challenging weather conditions.
