Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Takes Flight Amidst Challenging Winds
The 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta commenced with hundreds of balloons ascending into the clear desert sky, offering a captivating spectacle for gathered onlookers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event, which takes place from October 5 to October 13, is recognized as the “world’s largest gathering to celebrate hot air balloons,” according to event organizers.
Despite the excitement surrounding the event, pilots participating in the Special Shapes Rodeo faced challenges due to overpowering winds on Thursday. While the winds prevented some of the uniquely shaped balloons from taking off, they were still inflated for display, allowing audiences to appreciate their impressive designs. Fortunately, other pilots managed to launch and fly their balloons that day.
The festival this year featured 106 special shape balloons, including new additions such as a balloon shaped like Zozobra, honoring New Mexican tradition, Mazu representing Taiwan as the Chinese sea goddess, and Churro, a dog-shaped balloon with a dog named Churro as its co-pilot. Popular returning balloons include Airabelle the Creamland Cow, Darth Vader, Master Yoda Balloon, Montie the Black Sheep, and Allycorn.
The festival’s inaugural day was documented through video footage showing the massive balloons being inflated from their flattened states on the ground to full size in front of spectators, before launching into the sky.
The 9-day festival also includes various events like the “Flight of Nations,” scheduled to occur on Wednesday morning. This segment of the festival, which began in the 1970s, allows for a “unique cultural exchange,” according to festival organizers. Participating in the grouped launch are hot air balloons flying their respective country’s flags, with morning flying events starting at 7:00 a.m. local time, weather permitting. Countries represented in this year’s event include Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States, and debut attendance by North Macedonia.
