Alexis Ohanian Serena Williams Ice Raids

LOS ANGELES, CA – Alexis Ohanian, the husband of tennis star Serena Williams, publicly condemned recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests that have left families devastated. Ohanian shared his personal connection to the issue, reflecting on his late mother’s experience as an undocumented immigrant.

On Wednesday, Ohanian took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his views. He emphasized the need for ‘smart borders and humane immigration reform’ that includes comprehensive plans for legalization, rather than policies that split families apart.

His late mother, who initially arrived in the United States on an au pair visa, remained after her visa expired and later married his father, a U.S. citizen. Ohanian noted the profound impact her potential deportation could have had on his life and on the founding of Reddit, the company he created.

“As the son of an undocumented immigrant, it’s deeply personal,” Ohanian stated in his post. He underscored that while border safety is crucial, it should not come at the expense of family unity.

Ohanian called for a fair legalization process that prioritizes background checks, waiting periods, and strict standards, warning that those who do not comply should face consequences, but through due process.

In his message, he also highlighted the contributions of immigrants who work hard in simple jobs, such as day laborers waiting outside Home Depot and vendors selling food on streets. “These people are hardworking and should be allowed to contribute positively to the nation,” he said.

This recent post is just one of many where Ohanian has honored his mother, who had a fondness for Nordic licorice. In April 2025, he shared a memory of her, linking it to a nostalgic video he posted.

Ohanian’s advocacy for sensible immigration reform reflects how deeply immigration laws can resonate on a personal level and affect families across the country.
