An unsettling incident unfolded off the coast of Indonesia involving a 68-year-old American tourist, Colleen Monfore, who disappeared during a diving expedition. Her presumed remains were discovered in the stomach of a shark, raising questions over the cause of her death.

Monfore was diving near Pulau Reong island in the Southwest Maluku Regency when she was reportedly swept away by strong currents on September 26. Her group’s diving guide attempted to assist, but the attempt was unsuccessful, prompting an extensive eight-day search operation. Despite their efforts, the search was ultimately called off without finding Monfore.

A turning point in the harrowing case came when a fisherman in Timor-Leste, approximately 75 miles from the initial dive site, encountered a shark displaying obvious distress. Upon capturing the animal around October 4, the fisherman discovered human remains inside its stomach, which included parts of a wetsuit and bathing suit.

The initial suggestion was that Monfore might have been the victim of a shark attack. However, friends and acquaintances of the deceased, along with some experts, have questioned this version of events. A statement on social media by Kim Sass, identified as a close friend of Monfore, pointed towards evidence that suggests an alternative scenario. “This would not be possible if the shark had attacked her weeks ago,” Sass argued, emphasizing the advanced digestive capabilities of sharks that would have made identifying Monfore’s remains impossible if she had been attacked immediately after her disappearance.

Authorities in East Timor have coordinated with Indonesian officials to investigate further whether the remains could belong to someone else missing from the region. Muhammad Saleh Goro of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit stated that more information would be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

Sass’s Facebook post detailed doubts about the theory of a shark attack, expressing that Monfore’s experience and the conditions at the time suggest a different cause might be plausible. “There was a down current at the turn-around site, but it was manageable,” Sass explained, adding that Monfore, an experienced diver, would have been able to navigate the conditions.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Monfore’s tragic death as the community of divers and her friends mourn her loss. While shark attacks remain a rarity in the region, this incident has undoubtedly brought attention to safety measures in diving hotspots.
