New York, NY — Andy Serkis’ long-anticipated animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novella “Animal Farm” is nearing release after nearly 15 years in development. The film premiered at the prestigious Annecy Film Festival in June, but the reception was mixed.

Produced by Angel Studios, known for faith-based films like “Sound of Freedom,” this adaptation has raised eyebrows due to its content. “Animal Farm” features a star-studded voice cast, including Seth Rogen, Glenn Close, and Woody Harrelson.

Orwell’s 1945 novella is a sharp critique of totalitarianism, depicting farm animals who overthrow their human owner only to fall victim to a tyrannical regime led by pigs. The complexity of its themes poses a considerable challenge for any filmmaker, and Serkis aims to honor the original message while making it engaging for contemporary audiences.

However, after its screening at Annecy, some critics pointed out the film’s tonal shift. Instead of maintaining the novella’s grim satire, the adaptation reportedly incorporates more family-friendly elements, including comedic scenes that rely on juvenile humor, which some found distressing.

Despite these challenges, Serkis remains committed to delivering a version that does justice to Orwell’s work. “Animal Farm” is set to be released theatrically in 2026.
