Anne Hathaway has confirmed her return to the beloved role of Mia Thermopolis in “The Princess Diaries 3.” Fans of the popular franchise, which depicts the transformation of an ordinary teenager into the Princess of Genovia, can celebrate Hathaway’s announcement as production of the third installment is officially underway. Variety reported on this significant development on October 4, stating that Adele Lim, known for her work on “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Joyride,” will direct the film.

The announcement puts an end to years of speculation and uncertainty surrounding Hathaway’s involvement in the project and the film’s progress. On social media, Hathaway uploaded a playful video that resonated with fans of the series. In the video, the actress is seen counting to three with her fingers, symbolizing the third film, along with intercut clips from the first two movies in the franchise. These clips feature memorable moments, including dialogues featuring Julie Andrews alongside Hathaway herself.

The post was accompanied by a caption that reads: “Miracles happen 🌟👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.” Lim, the director, expressed her enthusiasm by stating, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

While the plot details for “Princess Diaries 3” remain under wraps, it is expected to follow the events of the 2004 sequel “The Royal Engagement,” where Mia accepts her responsibilities as a monarch following her grandmother’s reign. It is yet to be seen how Mia’s life as a queen has evolved over two decades. There has been no confirmation on whether fellow stars Julie Andrews and Chris Pine will reprise their roles.

The original “Princess Diaries,” released in 2001, was one of Anne Hathaway’s breakthrough roles, propelling her to international fame. In addition to this sequel, it is speculated that Hathaway might also return in a sequel to another film alongside Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
