Bening, who is a Democrat, expressed her frustration with the exploitation of trans individuals for political gain. Speaking on her personal experience as a mother, Bening explained that she initially valued her son Stephen Ira Beatty’s privacy due to their status as children of famous parents. However, as time passed, she realized the power and responsibility of sharing his story to advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community.

In a previous interview with AARP, Bening described her pride in Stephen’s accomplishments and praised his intelligence and resilience. She acknowledged her initial desire to protect her children from the hardships of life but later recognized their individual journeys.
