Annual Remembrance Day Ceremonies Held in Sofia Central Cemetery
The annual Remembrance Day ceremonies took place in the Commonwealth, German, French, and Italian war graves sections of Sofia Central Cemetery on November 11, 2023.
This day, observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, commemorates the Armistice that ended the First World War and honors the military and civilian casualties of that war and subsequent conflicts.
The UK ambassador, Rob Dixon, delivered a speech at the Commonwealth War Graves section, while the Irish ambassador, Martina Feeney, recited a poignant poem. Father Patrick Irwin led prayers and scripture readings at the Commonwealth, German, and Italian cemeteries.
A variety of diplomats and military representatives from the Commonwealth, the European Union, the United States, Serbia, North Macedonia, Vietnam, Ukraine, and Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry paid their respects by laying floral tributes. Additionally, a contingent from Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry was present to honor the fallen.
A Remembrance Sunday service will also be held soon.
