Annual O'riordan St. Patrick's Day Parade Returns To Youngstown

The 12th annual O’Riordan St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled to take place in Youngstown this Saturday. The parade, commencing at noon, will follow its traditional route starting on Hinman Street, moving north along Main Street, and concluding in front of the Stone Jug. Tim Adamson, the Porter Councilman, is to serve as the parade marshal, and Robert Emerson, the Executive Director of Old Fort Niagara, is set to lead alongside Fort Niagara soldiers.

Last year, despite cold and windy conditions, the parade carried on with the McCarthy School of Irish Dance having to cancel their performance. However, this year, the weather forecast looks more promising with no precipitation and temperatures expected to be in the high 40s.

For the judging of the floats, David Truesdale and Dotty Riordan will be the judges, awarding prizes for the best child and adult floats. Participation from various local groups is anticipated, including the Niagara Clown Alley, the MacKenzie Highlanders, Bandanas Bar and Grill, and Porter Empty Return among others.

Organizers of the event have highlighted the importance of the parade in memory of the late former Youngstown mayor, Neil Riordan, who passed away in 2011. Neil, a well-respected figure in the community, had always envisioned a St. Patrick’s Day parade for the village. The first parade in 2012, starting with just one shopping cart, has grown into an annual tradition.

Following the parade, bystanders can enjoy potato soup courtesy of the Village Diner. The event will feature performances from the Irish dancers and MacKenzie Highlanders at the intersection of Main and Lockport Streets. To emphasize the community spirit, various local organizations and agencies, such as the Youngstown Free Library, Old Fort Niagara, and the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., will also be participating in the parade.

Throughout the day, there will be no cost for entering a parade float, with entries being accepted right up to the day of the parade. For more details or inquiries about participating, individuals can reach out to the organizers through the YBPA Neil Riordan St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2024 Facebook page.
