Yarm Fair 2023

Yarm High Street in North Yorkshire is set to dazzle with bright lights and excitement as the annual Yarm Fair returns. The historic event, which can trace its origins back to 1207, will take place from Thursday, October 17, to Saturday, October 19.

The bustling high street will be transformed, featuring thrilling rides and enticing food stalls that are expected to attract hundreds of visitors over the three-day period. Yarm Fair has maintained its tradition for centuries, being canceled only twice: once due to the Covid-19 pandemic and for safety concerns caused by stormy weather last year.

This year, the duration remains at three days, following an unsuccessful proposal from the Showmen’s Guild North East to alter the schedule. Excitement is high, even though specific details about this year’s attractions have yet to be confirmed. Classic favorites such as the helter-skelter, dodgems, and ghost train are expected to return, alongside other popular rides like the Crazy Frog, Tageda, Miami, and waltzers.

Preparations for the fair will commence on Tuesday, October 15, with the High Street closure scheduled from 6pm to 11pm as the fair setups. Once open, the street will be closed between 5.45pm and 10.45pm on both Thursday and Friday, extending from 11.30am to 11.59pm on Saturday.

A traditional highlight involves the “riding of the fair,” during which horses traverse the High Street, harking back to the fair’s origins as a livestock trading event. This will occur at 11.30am on Saturday, to be followed by a blessing ceremony at 12.05pm.

Weather forecasts from the Met Office suggest a pleasant outlook for the event, with no current warnings or adverse conditions expected. Wednesday might see wet and windy weather, but it should clear up as cooler, drier conditions spread on Thursday, with potential wet weather returning by Friday evening.

While some local businesses may close during the fair, many will operate as usual. This longstanding event continues to be a significant feature for the local community, providing an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to enjoy the traditions and festivities.
