Frozen Schoolyard In Wisconsin Winter

NORTHWEST WISCONSIN — A severe Arctic cold front has forced multiple school districts across Barron, Burnett, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, and Washburn counties to close or delay classes on Monday, January 20, 2025. The decision comes as temperatures plummet to dangerous lows, with wind chills reaching as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Air temperatures began the day below zero, with highs expected to remain in the single digits. Wind chills are forecast to range between -30 and -15 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for students and staff. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for southeastern Wisconsin until noon Tuesday, while an Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Jefferson, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Dodge, Washington, and Ozaukee counties.

“The coldest part of this air mass arrives tonight,” said a local meteorologist. “Overnight lows will drop to -10 degrees near the lake and -15 degrees inland. Wind chills could surpass -30 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.”

Tuesday will see continued sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to rise above zero. A slow warm-up is expected by Wednesday, with highs reaching the 20s and wind chills finally turning positive. However, the warmer weather will bring light snow showers and breezy conditions.

School officials urge parents and guardians to monitor updates, as additional closures or delays may be announced. “It’s about time to watch on your time,” said a spokesperson for local news outlet TMJ4, encouraging residents to stay informed through live weather updates.
