Assam Member of Parliament Sarbananda Sonowal, known for his political acumen and dynamic leadership, has been recently welcomed into the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the third time.

Sonowal previously served as the Minister of State for Sports & Youth Welfare and marked his presence as the lone representative of the northeast in the Union Council of Ministers.

Having a background in the student movement, Sonowal transitioned to mainstream politics via prominent regional parties like the Assam Gana Parishad and eventually found his political home in the Bharatiya Janata Party.

During the 2021 Assam assembly elections, Sonowal’s role shifted as the BJP decided not to project any prominent figure, leading to Himanta Biswa Sarma‘s elevation as CM.

Despite this change, Sonowal’s contribution was acknowledged, and he was granted significant portfolios in Modi’s cabinet reshuffle, which took place in the same year.

Sonowal faced critique during the Citizenship Amendment Act protests, with some groups expressing disappointment over his perceived stance on safeguarding indigenous rights in the face of national policy decisions.

Known for his commitment to integrity and uniting diverse communities, Sonowal’s tenure as the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ witnessed both triumphs and challenges, solidifying his place in Assam’s political landscape.

Beginning his journey with student activism, Sonowal’s affiliations with AASU, AGP, and finally BJP have shaped his trajectory, leading to multiple stints in the Union and State governments.

Born in Mulukgaon, Dibrugarh, Sonowal remains devoted to Assam’s cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from Vaishnav saints like Sankardeva and Madhavdeva.
