Atlus Releases New Fantasy Social Sim RPG ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’
Gaming enthusiasts celebrated today as Atlus released its latest fantasy social simulation RPG, “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” on October 11. The new title incorporates a turn-based battle system reminiscent of Atlus’s renowned series, including “Shin Megami Tensei” and “Persona.” A notable feature of the game is the introduction of Archetypes, which function as battle classes, allowing players to explore various combat roles and proficiencies.
Archetypes available to players range from traditional RPG favorites such as the sword-wielding Warrior and elemental Mage to more unconventional roles like the Summoner, which introduces unique mechanics, and the support-focused Commander, whose gameplay emphasizes strategic positioning.
In “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” recruitment of new party members allows each to adopt any Archetype. However, unlocking these Archetypes and their advanced stages is a progressive challenge. Some require leveling up in other Archetype lineages, whereas others are hidden or have secretive unlock conditions. As one player explained, “By the time I needed to upgrade different pathways, I had already invested hours into other classes when I could have diversified my experience more strategically.”
Further complicating Archetype progression, the game links some roles to follower bonds, necessitating players to develop relationships with different characters to access them. To avoid potential surprises, many players seek guides detailing the requirements for each Archetype.
To unlock Archetypes, players need sufficient Magla currency, which can be acquired through battles, visiting the coronation rock in each town, bathing on one’s ship, and conversing with followers. The currency cost correlates inversely with followers’ bond progression, gradually reducing as relationships deepen.
The ultimate Archetype, known as Heroic Embodiment, is revealed later in the game. Each party member has one, representing the pinnacle of their class lineage. These special Archetypes require players to progress through several other pathways, prompting some to research requirements early to avoid extensive class grinding.
In addition to its complex battle mechanics, “Metaphor: ReFantazio” emphasizes the importance of developing bonds with followers, reminiscent of the social aspects found in the “Persona” series. Improved relationships not only enhance narratives but also unlock powerful abilities and new Archetypes.
