Austin Area Likely to Avoid Major Winter Weather Impacts
AUSTIN, Texas — The approaching storm system is trending slower and warmer for the Austin area, reducing the risk of significant winter weather impacts. Forecasters predict mainly cold rain for Wednesday night into Thursday, with only spotty wintry mix expected in parts of the Hill Country.
Areas such as Mason, Llano, Gillespie, Burnet, and Blanco counties could see some icy patches on elevated surfaces, but major issues are now likely to stay north of Central Texas. The slower-moving system allows temperatures to warm up before the bulk of the precipitation arrives, minimizing the chance of freezing conditions.
“This is still a relatively fluid situation, but as of now, we’re tracking mainly a cold rain moving in for Wednesday night into Thursday,” said the KVUE Weather Team. “There could still be some spotty wintry mix across parts of the Hill Country, but we are not expecting major problems at this time.”
Spotty showers are expected in the Hill Country Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, with more widespread rain arriving by lunchtime on Thursday. Temperatures are forecast to hover in the mid to upper 30s by late afternoon, keeping most areas above freezing.
“One or two degrees make a big difference in this forecast,” the KVUE Weather Team noted. “The precipitation will come to an end from west to east Thursday night into early Friday morning, with no significant travel impacts expected.”
Central Texas is expected to be completely dry by sunrise Friday. The KVUE Weather Team continues to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as conditions evolve.
