Los Angeles, CA – Austin Reaves, the Los Angeles Lakers guard, has declined a max extension offer worth $89.2 million over the next four years.

Reaves, who went undrafted before joining the Lakers, is entering the third year of a four-year, $54 million contract. The decision to turn down the extension comes as he prepares for unrestricted free agency next summer, where he hopes to command a higher salary.

League sources indicated that this move should not be seen as a sign of discord between Reaves and the Lakers. Rather, it reflects the limitations of what the Lakers could offer due to salary cap rules.

“I want to be in LA. I want to play my whole career in LA. I love it there,” Reaves said during his youth basketball camp in Arkansas earlier this month. “The Lakers are the best organization in basketball.”

Reaves, who averaged 20.2 points per game last season, is highly regarded within the organization. Lakers vice president Rob Pelinka mentioned Reaves as a key player during a post-season news conference. Pelinka emphasized the need for high-character players like Reaves, LeBron James, and Luka Dončić to build a winning team.

Despite Reaves’ intentions to remain with the Lakers, rumors regarding his trade value are swirling as the team looks to strengthen its roster. However, Pelinka reiterated the organization’s commitment to Reaves.

“We’re moving in the right direction. The sky’s the limit for us,” Reaves added, shrugging off trade speculations. “I keep my head down and work.”

As the Lakers navigate the offseason, they are focused on upgrading their roster. Reaves’ upcoming free agency complicates potential trades, with teams valuing his skills. Potential suitors might be hesitant to trade significant assets for a player they could sign next summer.

Currently, the Lakers are also seeking to fill positional needs, particularly at center and wing defense. Reaves hopes to be part of those plans when the new season begins.
