Authorities have issued a warning for individuals to steer clear of an ongoing bushfire in Elleker, located approximately 13 kilometers west of Albany. The bushfire is believed to have been deliberately ignited, prompting an extensive emergency response involving multiple agencies.

The fire ignited near the intersection of Lower Denmark Road and Elleker-Grassmere Road and is advancing in a northerly direction. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Parks and Wildlife Service reported the incident at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

As of the latest updates, there is no immediate threat to lives or residential properties. However, the DBCA has advised the public to avoid the vicinity of the fire. Key roadways including Lower Denmark Road, stretching from the Elleker townsite to Prescottvale Road, and Elleker-Grasmere Road, north of Muttonbird Road, have been closed to ensure public safety. Alternative routes have been established, and bus transport services are being escorted along their usual routes.

The firefighting efforts are being coordinated by the Parks and Wildlife Service, in conjunction with the City of Albany, the Elleker Bushfire Brigade, and the Torbay Bushfire Brigade. In an update provided at 1.58 p.m., the DBCA indicated that the fire had become stationary but remains neither contained nor controlled, necessitating ongoing firefighting activities.

Residents in the surrounding areas are advised to remain vigilant, keeping abreast of their local environment. They are also warned of potential risks such as falling trees and compromised infrastructure and are advised to keep all windows and doors securely shut to prevent smoke ingress.

Motorists in the area are cautioned to drive with extra care, using headlights for visibility amidst smoke. They are instructed to adhere to any guidance provided by emergency services personnel. In situations of reduced visibility due to smoke, drivers should pull over, keeping both headlights and hazard lights activated, waiting for the conditions to improve.

Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions who are impacted by the smoke are encouraged to contact their general practitioner or reach out to Health Direct‘s helpline at 1800 022 222 for assistance.
