Bangor-Brewer Veterans Day Parade Celebrates Those Who Served
BREWER, Maine – The annual Bangor–Brewer Veterans Day Parade stepped off Tuesday morning from the Brewer Shopping Center, bringing together community members to honor the men and women who have served in the military.
As the parade made its way through the streets to Downtown Bangor, spectators gathered to express their gratitude. U.S. Navy Veteran Dan McGovern emphasized the importance of the day, stating, “This is the day that we get to honor all veterans. Freedom isn’t free, and we’ve all devoted some part of our life to protect those freedoms.”
Zeny Robbins from Milford attends the parade every year to remember her late husband, Lawrence Robbins, a Navy veteran. She shared her feelings, saying, “I promised him that I’m going to honor you every year on Veterans Day. I miss him a lot. It’s been 12 years, but we loved each other so much.”
Gerald Bartlett, a 90-year-old Navy veteran from Newburgh, participated for the first time. Reflecting on his 20 years of service, he recalled, “I was on two aircraft carriers, two destroyers, and a radar picket ship. AGR-13, my lucky number.” His contributions reminded many of the sacrifices made throughout military history.
Many families brought children to the event, helping to instill respect for veterans in the next generation. Amelia, a young girl from Brewer, expressed her admiration, saying, “My dad’s a veteran, and now he is a Brewer firefighter. I just love how veterans serve for us because they save us sometimes.”
Local scout leader Matt Adams added, “It’s great for the kids to be able to experience this, say thanks, give appreciation to the men and women out there who have given their lives.”
U.S. Navy Veteran John Starbird concluded the day’s sentiments, stating, “I want to wish all of the veterans out there a very thankful and thoughtful day. That’s why we’re here.” The parade not only celebrated veterans but also fostered appreciation among the community.
