BBC presenter Jay Blades has pleaded not guilty to charges of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards his estranged wife. The 54-year-old, known for hosting the primetime show “The Repair Shop,” appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Friday to enter his plea.

Mr. Blades is accused of causing his wife, fitness instructor Lisa-Marie Zbozen, to fear for her safety, specifically alleging that she feared violence might be used against her on at least two occasions. The charges are related to incidents occurring between 1 January 2023 and 12 September of this year.

The couple’s relationship was publicly announced to have ended by Ms. Zbozen in an Instagram post dated 2 May. During the court proceedings, Judge James Burbidge KC presided and rejected a request for part of the trial to be conducted privately. The judge affirmed that the full details of the charges would be publicly disclosed during the prosecution’s opening.

A specific bail condition requiring Mr. Blades to wear an electronic tag was removed by the judge, citing “failings” by the company responsible for fitting the device. However, other conditions remain, including an exclusion zone that Mr. Blades must adhere to.

The court scheduled a potential trial date for 6 May next year. During the 12-minute court appearance, Mr. Blades, representing himself in a dark suit and tie, confirmed his identity and entered his not guilty plea. He left the court without making any statements to the waiting press.

The Repair Shop, first aired in 2017, is a popular BBC program featuring Mr. Blades as a furniture restorer who helps repair and rejuvenate treasured items brought in by participants. The show’s 14th series is anticipated to air later this year.
