Beatrice Chebet Wins 5000m at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan – Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet clinched another victory at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday, September 20, 2025, triumphing in the 5000-meter race. This win adds to her recent success at the championship where she also took gold in the 10,000-meter event.
Chebet completed the race in 14:54.36, outpacing her teammate and friend Faith Kipyegon, who secured the silver medal with a time of 14:55.07. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who previously won silver in the 10,000-meter race, rounded out the podium with a bronze medal finishing at 14:55.42.
The 25-year-old athlete demonstrated her tactical prowess, strategically following Battocletti for most of the race before making her decisive move in the final stages. “Running with the likes of Faith and Nadia, you just have to believe in yourself,” Chebet said. “Today was not an easy race.”
With this victory, Chebet became only the third woman in history to win both the 5000m and 10,000m titles at the same World Championships, joining the ranks of Tirunesh Dibaba and Vivian Cheruiyot.
The race started conservatively, with many competitors, including Kipyegon, Chebet, and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, remaining tightly grouped for the early laps. As the final lap approached, the lead shifted rapidly, with Kipyegon initially taking charge before Chebet unleashed her trademark sprint to claim victory.
Kipyegon praised Chebet’s performance, stating, “My friend Beatrice Chebet is the best. She has the world record, she is very tough to beat. I knew it was going to be a battle until the finish line.”
The win marks a significant milestone for Chebet, who has not lost a 5000m or 10,000m race since early 2023, except at the Kenyan national trials.
