Bee Gees legend Colin “Smiley” Petersen has passed away at the age of 78, as announced by a tribute band for the group on Monday. Petersen, who was the original drummer for the Bee Gees, played a pivotal role in the band’s early success. He was instrumental in the creation of some of the group’s classic hits, including *Massachusetts*, *To Love Somebody*, and *Words*.

Prior to his music career, Petersen was a child actor, starring in the Australian film *Smiley*, which earned him his lifelong nickname. In the 1960s, he became the first non-Gibbs brother to join the Bee Gees, and his drumming was seen as essential to the band’s sound during their early years.

Petersen is survived by his ex-wife Joanne and their sons Jaime and Ben. The tribute band, Best of Bee Gees, expressed their deep sorrow and gratitude for Petersen’s contributions, stating, “He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care and respect. Not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship. We love you Col. Rest in Peace.”
