Beloved Jamaican Broadcaster Alan Magnus Passes Away At 80

Renowned Jamaican broadcaster Alan Magnus has sadly passed away at the age of 80. Magnus, who spent his entire broadcasting career with Radio Jamaica (RJR 94 FM), was an icon of morning radio in Jamaica.

He began his media journey at Radio Jamaica in 1971 and quickly became part of an elite group of broadcasters, including names like Radcliffe Butler, Neville Willoughby, Don Topping, Marie Garth, and Henry Stennett.

Magnus retired from his long-running morning show in 2017, but his connection with the station remained strong as he continued to contribute to the show “Sunny Side Up” with a five-minute slot twice a week.

During his more than 46 years with Radio Jamaica, Magnus captivated listeners with his warm voice, insightful commentary, and unwavering dedication to his craft. His ability to connect with people through the airwaves made him a beloved figure in the hearts of his audience.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to Alan Magnus, expressing how his voice accompanied him on his journey to school as a child and acknowledging Magnus’ indelible legacy as both a broadcaster and a recording artiste with the song ‘Flying Machine’.

Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding also praised Magnus’ contributions to the radio industry, stating that his warm voice, insightful commentary, and unwavering dedication to his craft made him a beloved figure among listeners.

Tributes have poured in from various figures in Jamaican media, including Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport Olivia Grange, broadcaster Dionne Jackson Miller, press secretary Naomi Francis, talk show host and attorney Clive Mullings, Gleaner columnist and attorney Gordon Robinson, and communication consultant and columnist Jean Lowrie Chin.

The RJRGLEANER Group expressed sympathies to Magnus’ family and close friends, describing him as a “giant, a stalwart, and a pillar in broadcasting in Jamaica.” Group Senior Executive Corporate & External Affairs, Gary Allen, highlighted Magnus’ infectious laughter, quips, and memorable broadcasting style that captivated generations of listeners.

Alan Magnus will be remembered as a legendary broadcaster and a cherished figure in Jamaica’s media landscape. His contributions to the industry are a testament to his talent, professionalism, and enduring legacy.
