Beloved Super Gran Star Gudrun Ure Passes Away at 98

Gudrun Ure, the iconic actress known for her role as Super Gran in the beloved 1980s children’s show, has passed away at the age of 98. Her niece Kate McNeill confirmed the sad news of her aunt’s death.

Ure’s illustrious career spanned stage productions, radio plays, and various television appearances, including a notable role opposite Hollywood legend Orson Welles in a 1951 stage production of Shakespeare’s Othello.

Born in Milton of Campsie in 1926 to Allan and Lily Ure, she rose to fame portraying the granny bestowed with superpowers after a fortunate encounter with a magic ray in the hit ITV series Super Gran.

The Super Gran show, based on Forrest Wilson‘s books, captured the hearts of viewers as Granny Smith used her newfound abilities to protect the citizens of Chiselton from adversaries like the cunning Scunner Campbell, portrayed by Scottish actor Iain Cuthbertson.

Not only did Super Gran enjoy immense popularity in the UK, but it also garnered international acclaim, winning an International Emmy award in the Children and Young People category in 1985. The show featured a diverse range of guest stars including comedy legends Billy Connolly and Spike Milligan, among others.

Throughout her career, Ure lent her talents to a plethora of productions, from educational films like the Encyclopaedia Britannica series where she portrayed Lady MacBeth, to appearances in popular TV series like Casualty and Midsomer Murders, where her distinctive voice instantly stood out to fans.

Married to John Ramsay for over four decades until his passing in 2008, Ure leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and a stepson named Gordon. Her contributions to entertainment, particularly through her unforgettable portrayal of Super Gran, will forever be cherished by her fans worldwide.
