Independence Day White House Screening

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 1996 screening of the sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day at the White House took an unexpected turn when then-President Bill Clinton exited the screening room after witnessing a pivotal scene. The screening was a result of an invitation to the filmmakers during a press junket in New York City.

Director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin were in awe as they recalled standing in a screening room that used to be a bowling alley while Clinton enjoyed the film with First Lady Hillary Clinton. At the moment the Alien spacecraft destroyed the White House, Clinton abruptly left the room.

“He came back a minute later, shaking water off his hands,” Emmerich shared in a 2021 interview. This coincidental exit mirrors other audience reactions during test screenings, where viewers often rushed to the restroom following the explosive scene.

Devlin noted the humor in Clinton’s departure, saying, “Dean and I looked at each other and nearly started laughing.” He recalled how they were “in the White House watching it blow up,” emphasizing the bizarre nature of their experience.

These memories have resurfaced as the current administration has begun a renovation project that includes demolishing the East Wing screening room, which had been a venue for countless cinematic events.

The recent demolition has prompted mixed reactions, reminiscent of the explosive scenes from Independence Day, as the White House continues to serve as a backdrop for destruction in popular culture. The screening room, originally opened under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is no longer standing, a move seen by some as the erasure of a piece of history.
