Bill Hader Recalls Getting Fired for Spoiling Titanic Ending

LOS ANGELES, California — Actor Bill Hader detailed his unexpected firing from a movie theater during a recent episode of Netflix’s “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney.” Hader recounted the incident that occurred prior to the release of James Cameron‘s blockbuster “Titanic” in 1997, where he took action against a group of disrespectful sorority girls.
While working at the theater, Hader approached the girls, who had bought out a screening of the film, asking them to move from the doorway. Instead of complying, they mocked his appearance, comparing him to Charles Manson. Frustrated, Hader decided to give them a taste of cinematic reality.
“I was like, ‘Enjoy the movie. The boat sinks at the end. Leo dies,’” he told the audience, recalling the moment with humor. The reaction from the girls, according to Hader, was one of disbelief as they exclaimed, “No, he doesn’t.” He added, “Yeah, you think he’s asleep. But he’s frozen.”
Despite the jesting outcome of his actions, the theater’s manager was not amused and fired Hader shortly after the incident. “The manager came down smiling, and he was like, ‘Hey, Bill. I have to fire you,’” Hader said. “He loved it. Couldn’t look me in the eye, though.”
Hader’s playful revenge echoes a common debate surrounding the fate of Leonardo DiCaprio‘s character, Jack Dawson, who perished in the freezing waters of the Atlantic at the end of “Titanic.” Since the film’s release, many viewers have speculated whether there was enough room on the floating door for both Jack and Kate Winslet‘s character, Rose, to survive. In 2022, Cameron conducted a study to conclude that only one character could have made it.
“We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest,” Cameron stated. “We took two stunt people, replicated the raft from the movie, and conducted tests. The answer was, ‘There was no way they both could have survived.’ Only one could survive.”
Meanwhile, Hader’s comedic story has resonated with fans, many of whom shared their approval on social media. “This is the best pettiest revenge I’ve ever seen,” one user commented, while others expressed admiration for Hader’s boldness.
The episode featuring Bill Hader is now available for streaming on Netflix, offering viewers both laughs and a nostalgic look back at a pivotal moment in cinematic history.
