Bodybuilding Community Mourns the Passing of Big Lenny Persin
The bodybuilding community is mourning the loss of renowned figure Lenny Persin, also affectionately known as “Big Lenny,” who passed away at the age of 60. His death, reported to be due to congestive heart failure, was announced by industry expert Jon Bravo on October 10. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow bodybuilders alike.
“I have sad news to tell everyone that Big Lenny of the Del Rey Misfits passed away this morning, and it was heart failure,” Jon Bravo announced. “I had a chance to know him, and he was a gentle giant.” Big Lenny was known for his larger-than-life personality, and his ability to live life to the fullest despite challenges.
Big Lenny did not possess a typical bodybuilding physique due to a condition known as Palumboism, often attributed to the use of human growth hormone (HGH) and insulin, which affects muscle contraction. Despite this, he made a mark in several bodybuilding competitions, most notably securing second place in the 2017 NPC Ruby Championship.
Among those expressing condolences is retired bodybuilder Dave Palumbo, who remarked, “Lenny always joined us on the After Hours podcast any time I asked him; he agreed to fight Mr. G for charity… and he always was willing to give his unique opinions on any topic. I will miss you, Lenny.”
Big Lenny was a prominent figure within the group of bodybuilders known as the “Del Rey Misfits.” Fans have taken to social media to share memories and express their sorrow. “Such a great guy and always fun to be around! Will miss you, Big Lenny!” one fan tweeted.
The late bodybuilder had been candid about his health struggles, having posted videos discussing his battle with congestive heart failure. This condition, which affects the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, had been a significant challenge for him over recent years.
Heart failure typically occurs when the heart becomes too weak or stiff, often requiring medical intervention and management. It is a chronic condition that affects people, primarily the elderly, progressively over time.
The legacy of Big Lenny Persin continues to inspire many within the bodybuilding world. As Jon Bravo poignantly reflected, “He was well-loved in the fitness industry for so many years.”
