Bollywood Icon Manoj Kumar Passes Away at 87, Leaving Lasting Legacy

Mumbai, India – Veteran Bollywood actor and director Manoj Kumar, famed for his roles in patriotic films, passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. Kumar succumbed to heart-related complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis noted as a contributing factor, according to medical reports.
Kumar, born Harikrishnan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India (now Pakistan), made his Bollywood debut in 1957 with the film ‘Fashion’. He gained fame for his breakthrough role in Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961) alongside Sayeeda Khan. His performance in Gumnaam (1965) became one of the highest-grossing films of that year, earning approximately Rs. 2.6 crores.
Known affectionately as ‘Bharat Kumar,’ Kumar directed and acted in several iconic films, including Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981), which showcased themes of national pride and unity. His portrayal of nationalist characters resonated deeply with audiences, solidifying his status as a celebrated figure in Indian cinema.
“Shri Manoj Kumar ji was a versatile actor, who will always be remembered for making films rich in patriotism,” wrote Union Minister Rajnath Singh in a heartfelt tribute. “His unforgettable performances in films like Upkaar and Purab and Paschim have enriched our culture.”
Kumar’s contributions to cinema were widely recognized; he was honored with multiple accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, India’s highest film honor. Throughout a remarkable career spanning over four decades, he acted in over 50 films and directed several cult classics, leaving a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
His final cinematic appearance was in Jai Hind (1999), directed by his son Kunal Goswami. Although it did not perform well at the box office, Kumar’s legacy continued to inspire viewers and filmmakers alike.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit expressed deep sorrow over Kumar’s passing, stating, “It is a great loss to the industry. Manoj ji will be missed by all who knew him.” Many in the film fraternity have expressed their grief, reflecting on his significant impact on Indian cinema.
As the news of his demise spreads, tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues, honoring a life dedicated to the art of filmmaking and storytelling. Manoj Kumar’s cinematic journey has left an indelible mark, ensuring he will be remembered for generations to come.
