B 52 Bombers Arriving Raf Fairford

FAIRFORD, England — Four U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress aircraft from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, arrived at RAF Fairford, England, on February 11, 2025. This marks the commencement of the U.S. Air Force’s first European bomber deployment of the year, known as Bomber Task Force 25-2.

The deployment comes as part of a routine operation aimed at enhancing NATO’s collective defense. The bombers will be operating under the command of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFA) and are set to conduct various joint training exercises with allied forces, enhancing interoperability and readiness in the region.

During their integration flight into Europe, the B-52s collaborated with French Dassault Rafales, Swedish Saab JAS-39 Gripens, and Finnish F/A-18 Hornets. Colonel David Herndon, USAFE’s senior spokesman, stated, “Training with NATO Allies strengthens our ability to operate as one team. These missions reinforce our partnerships and prepare us to deliver decisive capabilities whenever and wherever they’re needed.”

The Bomber Task Force operations aim to demonstrate the U.S. military’s capacity to respond swiftly to security challenges, prompting ongoing engagement and support for NATO’s defense objectives. According to Major General Joseph Campo, the director of operations for USAFE-AFA, such missions are crucial for maintaining a high level of readiness and showcasing U.S. combat power in a dynamic security environment.

These operations are particularly important given the evolving global threats. They align with the Pentagon’s new focus on dynamic force employment, which aims to ensure U.S. forces remain agile and prepared to deter aggression. “Bomber Task Force missions reinforce our ability to rapidly project combat power,” said Campo.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, currently in Europe, is advocating for NATO allies to increase their defense budgets from 2 percent to 5 percent of their gross domestic product. He emphasized the strategic necessity for European nations to enhance their military capabilities, citing the imbalanced relationship between the U.S. and its European allies in terms of defense spending.

The B-52s’ deployment signifies the ongoing commitment of the United States to its NATO partners, reinforcing a united front amidst rising tensions in Europe, particularly regarding Russia’s military posture. Despite shifts in U.S. military strategy towards the Indo-Pacific region, the B-52s will continue to serve as a critical element of the U.S. military’s force positioning in Europe.

This latest deployment reflects the U.S. Air Force’s mission to conduct regular bomber task forces in Europe, enabling flexibility and interoperability with NATO forces. The 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron’s activities will include multiple joint exercises, enhancing not only their combat efficiency but also the collective readiness of NATO allies.
