ATLANTA, Ga. — The Atlanta Braves have recalled infielder Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Gwinnett as they face injury setbacks. The move comes just before Saturday’s MLB Speedway Classic against the Cincinnati Reds.

Ornelas, 25, has had a brief stint with the Texas Rangers earlier this season, playing four games and posting a batting average of .184 along with three RBIs in 54 career MLB at-bats. His versatility allows him to play multiple infield positions and even spot duty in the outfield.

This recall follows a series of roster adjustments prompted by injuries. Austin Riley has been placed on the 10-day injured list for a second time in two months due to a strained lower abdominal muscle. Riley suffered the injury while tagging out Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz during the Braves’ 4-2 victory on Sunday.

With Riley sidelined, the Braves also added infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A, as the team navigates a challenging season. Atlanta’s roster has been impacted significantly by injuries, with Ronald Acuña Jr. on the IL since July 30 and starting pitcher Grant Holmes also on the 60-day IL due to issues with his throwing arm.

The Braves currently sit in fourth place in the National League East, holding a record of 47-63 as they look to evaluate their young talent in the latter part of the season.

Ornelas will have a chance to showcase his skills in the coming games as Atlanta continues to deal with player injuries.
