Former Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, tragically passed away at the age of 73 this afternoon. The news was confirmed by her son, Ithateng Mokgoro, in a statement to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Justice Mokgoro had been battling injuries sustained from a car crash last year.
Reports indicate that the fatal incident occurred in April when the vehicle in which Justice Mokgoro was traveling was struck by a truck on the road between Warrenton and Kimberley in the Northern Cape. The accident left her with severe injuries, and she had been receiving medical care since then.
Soon after the news of her passing emerged, the family of Yvonne Mokgoro announced that a formal statement regarding her death would be released imminently. The specifics surrounding her funeral arrangements and any other related details are expected to follow shortly.
Justice Yvonne Mokgoro made history as one of the pioneer black female Justices to sit on South Africa’s highest court, the Constitutional Court. Her tenure spanned from October 1994 until October 2009, during which time she contributed significantly to the country’s legal landscape and jurisprudence.
