Brewers’ Uribe Displays Dominican Flag Before Game 1 Against Arizona
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Milwaukee Brewers closer Jhoan Uribe walked into the media auditorium at American Family Field carrying a Dominican Republic flag hours before Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Oct. 13.
This appearance came two days after the Brewers faced backlash from Chicago fans for celebrating their victory over the Cubs in the NL Division Series. The Brewers are set to begin a best-of-seven series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Uribe proudly displayed the red and blue flag, which features a crest in the center of the white cross dividing it into four sections. After closing out the clinching game against the Cubs, Uribe made a point to grab his flag amid the celebration on the field.
Although the flag he carried this time might not be new, it was clean and neatly pressed. He draped it carefully over the desk in front of him, securing it with Gatorade bottles along with fellow Dominican pitcher Freddy Peralta and Venezuelan outfielder Jackson Chourio.
“When I was a kid, I really liked watching [pitcher] Pedro Martinez,” Uribe said through Brewers interpreter Daniel de Mondesert. “It’s something I always really enjoyed, just the way he went about it, the way he would throw. I always remember him being with the flag at all times.”
Uribe expressed his pride in representing his country. “It’s a great honor,” he said. “It’s of great pride…and it makes me very happy to be able to bring it up and do it myself now.”
