British Singer Liam Payne Dies After Fall in Buenos Aires
Liam Payne, the British singer and former member of the boy band One Direction, passed away following a fatal fall from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday at the Casa Sur Hotel, left Payne with severe injuries, leading to his death at the scene, as confirmed by the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.
Buenos Aires police reported that Payne fell from a third-floor balcony, sustaining “extremely serious injuries”. Medics declared him dead on the spot. An autopsy revealed that Payne died from multiple traumas and internal and external hemorrhages. Authorities also noted the presence of substances in Payne’s room, suggesting potential alcohol and drug consumption prior to the fall.
Local officials reported that Payne was allegedly alone and under the influence at the time of the fall, which is thought to have been a result of semi or complete unconsciousness. According to law enforcement, circumstances suggest that Payne “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself,” indicating a possible impaired state during the fall.
The hotel’s manager had previously contacted emergency services reporting concern over a guest “under the influence” who had caused damage in the room. According to witness accounts, hotel staff heard loud noises and a “really loud, violent scream” from Payne’s room before the fall.
In response to the death, Payne’s family released a statement expressing their deep sorrow, describing him as a “kind, funny and brave soul.” Additionally, Payne’s former One Direction bandmates shared their grief, releasing a joint statement stating they were “completely devastated” by his passing.
The United Kingdom Foreign Office has been in contact with Argentinian authorities as an investigation into the death continues, described by local law enforcement as under “dubious” circumstances but currently focusing on an incident triggered by substance abuse.
Payne had previously opened up about his struggles with addiction and his mental health challenges during and after his time with One Direction. The band’s formation on “The X Factor” in 2010 led to global fame, with successful tours and several hit albums.
His tragic passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow artists, family members, and fans across the globe, remembering Payne for his profound impact both as a musician and individual.
