Broadway Icon Chita Rivera Dies at 91, Leaving Behind a Legacy in the Theater
Chita Rivera, the Tony Award-winning dancer, singer, and actress known for her immense talent on Broadway, has passed away at the age of 91. Her daughter, Lisa Mordente, announced her death after a brief illness in New York.
Rivera first gained fame in 1957 when she portrayed Anita in the original production of ‘West Side Story,’ and her career in the theater spanned over five decades, ending with her energetic performance in ‘The Visit’ in 2015.
Recognized for her contributions to the industry, Rivera was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, presented by President Barack Obama, and served as the marshal at the Puerto Rican Day Parade in 2013.
Throughout her career, Rivera collaborated with esteemed Broadway talents such as Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Fosse, Gower Champion, Michael Kidd, Harold Prince, Jack Cole, Peter Gennaro, John Kander, and Fred Ebb.
Despite a near-fatal car accident in 1988 that crushed her right leg, Rivera continued to shine as a star both on Broadway and during her travels. Known for her dedication and passion, she always performed at her fullest capacity, earning her two Tony Awards for ‘The Rink‘ in 1984 and ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ in 1993.
Rivera’s other notable Tony nominations highlighted her exceptional performances in productions such as ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ ‘Chicago,’ ‘Bring Back Birdie,’ ‘Merlin,’ ‘Jerry’s Girls,’ ‘Nine,’ and ‘Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life.’
Firmly devoted to the art of theater, Rivera expressed her longing for more original musicals that combine music, lyrics, words, scenery, and stories to transport audiences and take risks.
Her music career includes several albums, including two solo CDs, ‘And Now I Sing‘ and ‘And Now I Swing,’ and the compilation ‘Legends of Broadway,’ featuring tracks from her original cast recordings.
The remarkable role of the glamorous Spider Woman in the musical ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ solidified her status as a force of nature on stage. Additionally, she originated the role of Velma Kelly in the original production of ‘Chicago’ in 1975.
Chita Rivera’s resilience and unwavering commitment to her craft were evident throughout her life, as she overcame obstacles and continued to inspire audiences. Her legacy as a Broadway icon will forever be remembered.
