Brush Fire Erupts at Joint Base Cape Cod, Smoke Billows

BOURNE, Massachusetts – A brush fire broke out Thursday afternoon at Joint Base Cape Cod, generating thick smoke that billowed into the sky. The blaze started during a planned burn designed to manage forest fire risks, according to officials from the Massachusetts National Guard.
While the fire began as a controlled burn, it spread beyond the designated area yet remained within the military base’s property. Local fire departments were called in as a precaution to aid in extinguishing the flames quickly.
Firefighters from across Cape Cod responded to the scene, with assistance from aircraft requested to help tackle the fire’s spread. Massachusetts’ Department of Fire Services has sent rehabilitation units to support local crews and activated the Statewide Fire Mobilization Plan, enabling mutual aid from neighboring areas.
Video footage captured by a tower camera in New Bedford displayed plumes of gray smoke rising above the tree line. Emergency officials are working to contain the blaze, ensuring safety measures are in place.
The situation is ongoing, and further updates regarding the fire’s status will be provided as they become available.
