Lakeside Fire Brush Fire Smoke Evacuation

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Firefighters are battling a brush fire that erupted around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, near El Monte Road in Lakeside, East San Diego County. The blaze has burned approximately 50 acres and is sending thick plumes of smoke into the air, visible from miles away.

The fire is spreading at a moderate pace and poses a threat to nearby structures. Fire crews from CAL FIRE, Lakeside Fire Protection District, and San Diego County Fire are on-site, utilizing both air and ground resources to contain the flames.

In response to the fire, evacuation orders have been issued for residents in the affected area. A Temporary Evacuation Point has been established at the Walmart Supercenter located at 13487 Camino Canada in El Cajon.

Authorities are advising residents to prepare a ‘Go Bag’ containing essentials, such as sturdy shoes and a flashlight, in case of sudden evacuations. It is recommended that families ensure they have these items ready near their beds.

As the fire burns, conditions are exacerbated by Santa Ana winds, which are known to bring dry air from the desert toward California’s coast. These winds increase the risk of wildfires, helping fires grow rapidly once ignited.

The water year in California begins each October and tracks rainfall totals throughout the year. Budgets of rainfall assist in mitigating fire risks, while below-average precipitation leads to drier vegetation that fuels wildfires. Power companies may preemptively shut off electricity in areas identified as critical fire hazards to reduce the risk of electrical fires.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are coordinating efforts to safeguard lives and property.
