Buffalo Ny Lake Effect Snow Storm

Buffalo, New York, is preparing for a significant winter storm as a lake-effect snow event is expected to impact the area. According to the National Weather Service, a snow band is projected to move north towards the City of Buffalo, bringing with it the potential for heavy snowfall at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour in the most persistent bands.

Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon held a news conference on Saturday to outline the city’s preparedness measures. These include the implementation of winter parking regulations, such as restrictions on overnight parking on bus routes and seasonal alternate parking on side streets to facilitate safe navigation for plows and emergency vehicles. Additionally, warming centers have been activated at Tosh Collins Community Center, Machnica Community Center, and Hennepin Park Community Center to assist residents in need.

A Code Blue is also in effect, with shelters open at 586 Genesee Street and the Dulski Center at 129 Lewis Street from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The 586 Genesee Street location will also serve as a daytime warming center. The city’s 311 Call Center is fully operational to assist residents with non-emergency inquiries or storm-related issues.

The surrounding areas have already experienced significant snowfall, with reports of 30 inches of snow falling from Friday into Saturday morning around Mayville, New York, as part of a multi-day lake-effect snow event.

Residents are urged to prioritize safety and stay informed during this weather event, with continued updates available on the City of Buffalo’s website. As the storm progresses, residents are also reminded to support local businesses safely during Small Business Saturday).
