Buffalo New York Weather Forecast

BUFFALO, N.Y. — On Wednesday, March 19, Buffalo recorded a new high temperature of 76 degrees, breaking the previous record of 74 degrees set in 2012. The unseasonably warm weather marked the last official day of winter.

The day began with clear skies and a warm front that set the stage for record-breaking temperatures across western New York. The National Weather Service reported that the temperature climbed to 74 degrees by early afternoon, tying the earlier record before surpassing it later in the day.

“We’re not going to see weather like this for quite a while,” said Meteorologist Heather Kenyon. “This is just a glimpse of spring before colder temperatures return.”

Other parts of the region also experienced record highs, with Rochester reaching 77 degrees, tying a record that had stood since 1903. Watertown recorded a high of 76 degrees, exceeding its previous record of 73 degrees, also set in 2012.

While residents enjoyed the warmth, forecasters are advising that this pleasant weather will be short-lived. A noticeable drop in temperatures is expected, with highs falling back into the 40s as the week progresses. “Expect a roller coaster of temperatures with a chance of rain or snow pretty much every other day,” Kenyon added.

The forecast indicates that temperatures will begin to decline on Thursday, with highs in the mid-50s, quickly dropping throughout the afternoon. Rain is also expected to mix with snow, especially in higher elevations.

According to the Weather Service, the normal high for Rochester in mid-March is 45 degrees, increasing to 49 degrees by the end of the month. In light of the impending weather pattern changes, residents are urged to prepare for significantly cooler conditions.

“This is typical of March in our area, where winter weather can linger even as spring approaches,” Kenyon said.

The Spring Equinox will arrive early Thursday morning at 5:01 a.m., marking the official start of spring. Despite the warm temperatures this week, the forecast suggests the chilly weather will persist throughout the weekend.
