Burkina Faso’s Army Chief Faces Rising Jihadist Threats

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — General Moussa Diallo has quickly emerged as a pivotal figure in Burkina Faso’s recent military challenges since his appointment as the Chief of Staff on December 19, 2024. His leadership comes at a time marked by an increase in jihadist attacks and heightened tensions within military ranks.
Just this month, the region of Solenzo witnessed violent assaults targeting the Fulani population, reportedly executed by local militia groups allied with the Burkinabè army. These ongoing injustices underline the urgency of Diallo’s position, which has led to a significant debate surrounding his role — seen by some as a committed soldier and by others as a supporter of an authoritarian regime.
On the security front, the Nigerian military reported multiple incidents in the Torodi area along its southwestern border, where jihadist actions have endangered civilian populations, prompting military reinforcements to maintain peace. On April 14, Burkinabè forces engaged armed attackers, resulting in six assailants being killed while one soldier sustained minor injuries.
Moreover, a recent outburst of violence in Makalondi, a critical town near the Burkina Faso border, saw an armed group targeting a police precinct on April 6, although no casualties were reported. This incident prompted a local exodus, forcing residents to seek safety elsewhere.
General Diallo has emphasized the need for a united military bolstered by collaboration among Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, who have seen an increase in joint efforts to combat terrorism. “Our people expect results, and we have a historical duty to fulfill this legitimate aspiration,” he stated during a recent meeting with military counterparts.
Despite these challenges, returning security to the affected regions remains a complicated task. The deteriorating security situation in Burkina Faso has led to significant calls for stability and a decisive response from local and international authorities alike.
