Burnley Preston North End Football Match 2024

The highly anticipated Lancashire derby between Burnley and Preston North End at Turf Moor concluded in a goalless draw, marked by on-field controversy and heated exchanges. This result saw Burnley miss an opportunity to climb to the top of the Championship table, while Preston secured a crucial point in their struggle to steer clear of relegation.

The match, attended by 20,816 fans, featured a contentious moment early on when Preston’s Emil Riis had a goal disallowed for offside in just the fourth minute. Riis capitalized on Ben Whiteman‘s smart low free-kick, but replays suggested the Danish striker’s timing was spot on. The offside decision left Preston feeling aggrieved, with manager Paul Heckingbottom expressing his frustration afterwards, stating, “It’s disappointing for me, disappointing for them and the fans.”

Despite the disallowed goal, Preston proved to be a formidable force in the opening half, creating several opportunities. Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, integral to Preston’s strategy, received a booking for time-wasting towards the end of the first half. Preston’s Ali McCann also had notable attempts, including a shot over the bar following a pass from Brad Potts.

Burnley’s attempts were less fruitful, with Jaidon Anthony‘s effort in the 27th minute being one of the few that tested Woodman. Burnley manager Scott Parker commented on his team’s performance, acknowledging a lack of urgency by saying, “The game looked a little bit lethargic for us.”

The match intensified in the second half, featuring several altercations among players. A penalty appeal by Burnley was dismissed when Anthony was perceived to have been impeded by Robbie Brady. Tempers flared as McCann and Burnley captain Josh Brownhill clashed, resulting in bookings for both players. Further discord ensued following a shoving incident involving Lyle Foster, escalating into a larger confrontation among players of both teams.

The fiery stalemate left both teams with a single point each, maintaining Burnley in second place with 17 points and Preston edging towards safety, positioned in 21st. Reflections on the game saw Heckingbottom praise Preston’s approach, stating, “We’ve come to play a good team and really taken the game to them.” Meanwhile, Parker noted Preston’s effective disruption tactics throughout the match.
