Calcutta High Court Orders College Principal to Leave
The Calcutta High Court has made a significant decision regarding Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former head of Kolkata‘s Medical College and Hospital, following a tragic incident involving a doctor who was raped and murdered last week.
The court has directed Dr. Ghosh to take a leave of absence and to submit a formal application by 3 pm today. If he fails to do so, the court has indicated it will force him to vacate his position.
During the hearing, the court expressed frustration over Dr. Ghosh’s continued role, noting that as the principal, he should have been among the first to be questioned about the incident. The judges questioned the state counsel on why they were protecting him.
Dr. Ghosh had originally resigned, claiming moral responsibility for the tragic incident, stating that the victim felt like a daughter to him. However, he was reinstated as the head of Calcutta Medical College just a day later, which has sparked widespread outrage.
The court criticized the West Bengal government’s handling of the situation, including delays in informing the victim’s family about her death. It highlighted the lack of empathy shown by Dr. Ghosh in light of the gruesome event.
The situation has angered many, with doctors and nursing staff holding protests to voice their concerns. The court declared that the principal should not be involved in administrative duties if he cannot display appropriate empathy for the staff and the victims.
The High Court has also expressed strong disapproval of how the state’s government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is managing this deeply troubling case, categorizing it as a major failure to protect its healthcare professionals.
