SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A series of light earthquakes rattled both Northern and Southern California this week, with the most recent tremor hitting shortly after midnight Tuesday just off the coast of Petrolia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake struck at a depth of approximately 12 miles, but no injuries or damage have been reported.
Earlier in the week, San Bernardino experienced tremors with two notable earthquakes on Monday morning. The first quake, measuring 3.6 in magnitude, occurred at 9:44 a.m. local time, followed by a second tremor of magnitude 3.0 just three minutes later. Both earthquakes were felt in nearby cities, but there have been no reports of significant damage or injury.
Residents in Southern California reported light shaking that was described as mild on social media by various users. The USGS provided updates, noting that the earthquakes, though light, were concentrated in the area, providing a feeling of unease among local populations.
The seismic activity has raised awareness about California’s geological landscape, given the state’s history of significant quakes. However, experts have reassured the public that such tremors are common and not necessarily indicative of a larger seismic event. “These smaller quakes often serve as reminders of our dynamic Earth,” said a seismologist from the USGS.
As of now, officials are continuing to monitor the seismic activity but maintain that there is no immediate cause for concern. With the seismic restlessness continuing, residents are encouraged to be prepared and remain informed about earthquake safety measures.
