911 Call Reveals Details in Fatal Burke County Shooting

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Newly released 911 recordings are shedding light on the fatal shooting of Telvin Osborne, 30, in Burke County over the weekend. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, and authorities arrested 25-year-old Hannah Cobb on Tuesday for felony involuntary manslaughter.
Cobb, who remains in custody at Burke County Jail, is slated for a bond hearing on Friday. The 911 call, which lasts nearly nine minutes, captures moments of confusion and panic, though the audio quality is poor. At one point, Cobb tells the dispatcher, “I didn’t mean to, ma’am. It was an accident. We were checking the chamber of my gun and it accidentally went off.”
Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams addressed the media, indicating that there is currently no evidence supporting Cobb’s claim that she was cleaning the gun at the time of the incident. “This has not been classified as an accidental shooting,” he stated, noting that the shooting occurred after both parties had been drinking.
Investigators were called to the scene at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, where they found Osborne in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Cobb, who reported the shooting, told deputies that she and Osborne had been out the entire night prior to returning home. According to the report, she was checking her firearm “as they do every night” when the gun discharged. “I thought the gun was safe while checking it,” she told authorities.
“This is very tragic that he lost his life,” Sheriff Williams remarked, sharing that Osborne was a father, son, and employee at the Savannah River Site. Copious community concern followed the absence of an immediate arrest after the shooting, prompting increased pressure for a thorough investigation.
Williams further revealed that investigators worked around the clock following the shooting, stating, “We put in 48 hours – literally.” He described the meticulous nature of the inquiry, which involved interviewing friends and family to grasp the relationships and lifestyle of all parties involved.
While initially viewed as an accident, the sheriff indicated that an altercation involving “pushing and shoving” occurred before the shooting. “It is reckless to go out and get drunk and then introduce a firearm into an argument,” Williams added.
Family members of the victim expressed frustration over perceived delays in the investigation, indicating an urgent need for justice. More charges for Cobb are a possibility as the investigation continues.
The sheriff’s office has not previously responded to this home for other incidents. In light of similar violent episodes, including a recent armed robbery, community safety remains a primary concern. Authorities are offering a reward of $5,000 for information leading to further arrests related to violent crimes in the area.
