Calls For Speaker Of The National Assembly To Step Down Amid Corruption Allegations

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the resignation of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, following reports that her residence in Bruma, Johannesburg, was raided by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) over corruption claims.

Allegations suggest that Mapisa-Nqakula received and solicited around R2.3 million in cash from a former military contractor during her tenure as the Minister of Defence.

As the head of the legislative body in South Africa, the Speaker bears significant responsibility, with the Rules of Parliament expecting them to uphold the dignity and good standing of the House.

The serious nature of the corruption allegations which led to a raid on her home goes against the core principles outlined in the Rules, casting doubt on her ability to fulfill her role effectively.

The DA emphasizes the importance of maintaining public trust in the institution and asserts that Mapisa-Nqakula must step down to uphold the integrity of the office entrusted to her.

The party underscores that individuals in such positions must display the highest standards of integrity and accountability, leading by example and ensuring adherence to oaths of office by Members of the Executive and Parliament.

Continued presence of the Speaker amidst these allegations not only raises concerns about her capacity to lead but also undermines the integrity of the legislative body as a whole.

The DA now urges Parliament and the Ethics Committee to expedite the investigation process to ensure swift and thorough proceedings. Further steps by the party regarding this issue will be announced in due course.
