Canada Wildfires Smoke Air Quality Alerts

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — States bordering the Great Lakes are under air quality alerts as smoke from several dozen wildfires in Canada drifts southward. As of May 30, 2025, authorities reported 174 active wildfires in Canada, with 94 classified as ‘out of control.’

According to local officials, the smoky winds are expected to reach areas like northern Minnesota, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and most of Wisconsin, endangering air quality for sensitive groups. Residents in these regions are advised to limit outdoor activity and take indoor breaks if they experience symptoms like shortness of breath or coughing.

Heavy smoke is projected to arrive in Green Bay, Wisconsin, around noon local time, creating hazy conditions. The effects will extend into the afternoon and evening, potentially reaching cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, and even as far east as Detroit, leading to an orange-hued sunset due to the smoke.

In Canada, British Columbia and Alberta are among the hardest hit, with 61 and 51 active fires respectively. The country has reached its highest National Preparedness Level, requesting international assistance to combat the widespread flames.

After declaring a state of emergency on Thursday, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced that 17 wildfires were active in his province, with some communities already evacuated. ‘We’ve had to evacuate about 15 communities,’ he stated, noting a severe lack of moisture has contributed to over 200 wildfires this spring.

Neighboring Manitoba had previously declared a state of emergency as wildfires forced 17,000 residents to flee. Prime Minister Mark Carney offered full support to Manitoba’s evacuation efforts. ‘The federal government stands ready to assist,’ he wrote.

The Canadian wildfires have raised significant concerns in the Midwest, with areas like Chicago, Indiana, and Ohio anticipated to experience the smoke’s effects by this weekend. Air quality alerts from Friday through Sunday forecast smoky skies that could reach as far as the Southeast.

As conditions continue to evolve, authorities urge residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions against hazardous air quality.
