Chanapora Assembly Election 2024

Srinagar, Oct 8: Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, the president of Jammu & Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), has extended his congratulations to Mushtaq Guroo, a candidate from the National Conference (NC), following Guroo’s victory in the Chanapora Assembly segment.

Bukhari acknowledged the outcome of the election, expressing respect for the public verdict. He stated, “I congratulate Mushtaq Guroo Sahib on his victory in the Chanapora constituency. I am thankful to the people who voted for me, as well as those who did not. I humbly respect the public verdict,” through a post on his official handle.

Mushtaq Guroo has claimed the seat with a margin of 5,688 votes, defeating Altaf Bukhari, who was one of the main contestants in the election. This marks a significant win for the National Conference in the region.

The election trends published by the Election Commission of India revealed that the ongoing counting has shown the NC and Congress alliance leading in 47 out of 90 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir region. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), another significant competitor, is leading in 28 seats.

In the Chanapora constituency alone, a total of 81,266 voters were registered, with a notable gender ratio of 910.12 female voters per 1,000 male voters. The competition was fierce with candidates like Mohammed Iqbaal Trumboo from the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and AR Wani representing the Jammu & Kashmir Awami National Conference also in the fray.

Historically, in the 2014 assembly elections, the PDP had emerged with 28 seats, which led to the formation of a coalition government with BJP. However, political dynamics shifted in 2018 when the BJP withdrew its support, resulting in significant changes in the region’s governance.
