Car Drives Off Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, Diving Team Unsuccessful in Recovery Effort
In a shocking incident at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, a car drove off the 14th Street Pier and plunged into the ocean early on Saturday morning. Authorities believe the vehicle, which was located on the ocean floor using sonar equipment, may have breached multiple gates to reach the pier’s end. The exact number of people inside the car remains unknown, and it is unclear whether the incident was intentional or accidental. The Virginia Beach Police Department is currently investigating the matter.
Efforts to retrieve the car by a diving team from Crofton Diving and Salvage were hindered by rough waters in the area. Despite having a plan in place, the team was unable to carry out the recovery operation due to unsafe conditions. Officer Jude Brenya stated that they would need to devise an alternate plan to remove the vehicle from the water. He assured that the car is still stationary in the last known location and will be closely monitored until the next recovery attempt. The police department intends to return later this week, although no specific date has been set.
The incident left the Oceanfront community in shock as employees at various businesses arrived at work to the distressing news. Manon Scholl, who works at Ocean Eddie’s on the pier, received a phone call from a friend recounting the incident. She expressed her surprise and sadness upon hearing about someone driving off the pier, calling it a difficult situation to comprehend. The incident was captured on video by Kaylynn Crawford, whose reaction reflected the disbelief and surprise felt by many witnesses. As of now, the police have not provided any details regarding the vehicle and its occupants.
