Andrew Garfield Cardboard Cut Out Florence Pugh

At the recent London Film Festival, Andrew Garfield garnered attention with an unusual red carpet accessory—a life-size cardboard cut-out of Florence Pugh, his absent co-star. Pugh, unable to attend due to filming commitments, was represented in a light-hearted manner by Garfield during the premiere of their film “We Live In Time.”

The film, which stars Garfield and Pugh, explores the poignant story of a young chef, Almut, played by Pugh, who is diagnosed with cancer. Garfield portrays Tobias, her partner and the father of their young daughter. “We Live In Time,” directed by John Crowley, has received mixed reviews since its Toronto premiere.

John Crowley, who previously worked with Garfield on “Boy A,” received praise from some critics for his “tender yet truthful touch” in directing. Reviews, however, have varied widely. One critic described the film as a “life-affirming” portrayal, while others dismissed it, calling it “the biggest cinema disappointment of the year.” Another critic referred to it as a “soggy handshake of a film.” Despite mixed opinions, performances by Garfield and Pugh have been highlighted as the film’s strengths.

Andrew Garfield attended the premiere at London’s Royal Festival Hall dressed in a blue suit with flared trousers, accompanying the cardboard version of Pugh with playful poses. The humorous stunt was well-received by photographers and attendees alike, as Garfield gamely interacted with the cut-out, providing both serious and joking gestures for the cameras.

Garfield and Pugh’s on-screen performances have generally been well-received, with some critics noting their “stirringly excellent” chemistry and their ability to balance both comedic and dramatic scenes effectively. In one significant scene, Tobias helps to shave Almut’s head, a gesture reflecting the depth of their on-screen relationship.

Outside of “We Live In Time,” Florence Pugh is known for films such as “Little Women” and “Black Widow,” while Andrew Garfield has appeared in “The Social Network” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”
