Rome, Italy — Cardinal Timothy Dolan, 75, the Archbishop of New York, is facing new challenges in an evolving Catholic Church. Known for his charisma and leadership skills, Dolan has often been recognized as one of the more conservative figures in the College of Cardinals.

In a March 2013 interview shortly after Pope Francis was elected, Dolan expressed strong confidence that Jorge Mario Bergoglio would be the right leader for the church at that moment. His faith in Francis reflects Dolan’s experience as a prominent figure within the Catholic institution, having served as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2010 to 2013 and being named a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

Dolan has made a name for himself not just through his ecclesiastical roles but also by engaging with the public. His lively personality was on display during the 2018 Met Gala, a high-profile charity event, where he spoke with celebrities such as actor Richard Gere and host Jimmy Fallon. His participation in this glamorous event was met with mixed reactions, particularly from conservative Catholics.

In recent years, however, Dolan’s positions have come under scrutiny. His outspoken criticism of Democrats and support for Republicans, including prayer for Donald Trump during his inauguration, has led some to question his influence within the church. Observers note that while Dolan may resonate with conservative cardinals from Europe and Africa, he seems to be losing ground with North American counterparts, who tend to align with more progressive views characteristic of Pope Francis.

Dolan’s ability to bridge divides and promote dialogue within the Catholic community will be critical as the church navigates an increasingly complex landscape.
