Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Leo XIV

Vatican City — Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old from Chicago, was elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on May 8, 2025. He chose the name Leo XIV, marking several historic firsts, including being the first U.S.-born pope and the first from the Augustinian order.
